Title: Nevada - 21
Author: Unknown
Description: Between its construction in 1915 and its sinking in early 1944, the "Nevada" saw several owners and areas of service. Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, built the "Nevada" for the Goodrich Transportation Company. In 1917 the ship was sold to the government of Russia and refitted at Montreal for ocean service. The Russian imperial government collapsed before the "Nevada" reached her new owners, and the ship became the property of the U.S. Government in 1918. From 1921 until 1943 she sailed the Great Lakes for two owners. The U.S. War Department purchased the ship in November 1943 and rebuilt her as an ocean-going cargo freighter. The "Nevada" was caught in a storm on the north Atlantic Ocean and, after five days, foundered. Only 29 of her crew of 64 were rescued by the Coast Guard cutter "Comanche."
