Description: Erie and Ottawa County, Ohio, farmers and fishermen found seasonal work as ice harvesters at an average, daily wage of $2. A group of harvesters stand before a Danbury icehouse where ice blocks were stacked and then packed in sawdust until needed. Much of the harvest was transported east to Cleveland, Ohio. More than 90 percent of the ice consumed by Cleveland, Ohio, residents came from the ice fields near Sandusky Bay and the Erie Islands.
